The criminal case involving an RNC officer accused of numerous assault charges against her partner was called in Corner Brook provincial court Tuesday morning.
33-year-old Noelle Laite faces charges of assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and choking the woman.
The Crown claims the incidents occurred in Pasadena while the officer was off-duty, from September of 2020 up to January of this year.
That’s when the province’s Serious Incident Response Team, or SIRT-NL, stepped in, laying the first charges under its mandate, which includes investigating cases involving the police.
Laite has been with the RNC since 2016 and will remain on the job, but has been assigned administrative duties pending the outcome of the case.
In Corner Brook provincial court Tuesday morning, the Crown said it will proceed by summary conviction, which is the less serious route of prosecution as opposed to by indictment.
Laite was not required to be in court and remains free on conditions.
Defence lawyer Robby Ash appeared for her, and asked for more time to review all of the Crown’s case.
The matter will be called again on May 24 when it’s expected Laite will enter a plea to the charges.
