The NL911 board is being folded into government, and one of the challenges they’re looking to tackle is civic addresses.
Justice and Public Safety Minister John Hogan says about 50 per cent of people in the province don’t have a civic address.
Hogan says the CRTC has a working group on civic addresses, noting that technology will play a role in addressing the concerns.
He says they want to make sure that emergency responders know exactly where to go, and a lack of information around civic addresses can hinder that. However, he says the point of the next generation 911 system is to address those challenges.
According to government, they aren’t aware of any instances where confusion around civic addresses has affected an emergency response in this province.
As part of the new 911 legislation, municipalities will be required to provide government with information about residential, commercial, and other properties in their town.
