A new local group is hoping that Newfoundland and Labrador will have representation at the 2022 Canada 55 Plus Games set for Kamloops, British Columbia in August.
This province is the only one without a team in the Olympic-style competition and Brent Smith of the NL Senior Games Association hopes to change that.
He says he’s already received a fair bit of interest from local rec leagues and others he has contacted to have the NL flag flying at this year’s competition.
Those interesting in registering are asked to do so before the May deadline.
Smith says sports include 5-pin Bowling, track and field events, running races of various lengths, badminton, tennis, darts, dragon boating, curling, ice hockey and even Scrabble.
Smith says he knows a lot of people 55 plus who are actively pursuing sporting activities.
He cites hockey as just one example with men and women playing in rec leagues where “we could certainly score a few goals up there.”
Smith encourages those who are interested to check out their Facebook page, or to contact him at brent55plusnl@gmail.com
