The number of official confirmed cases of COVID-19 is dropping steadily, but hospitalizations and deaths remain relatively high.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald last week indicated that it appears as though Newfoundland and Labrador may have passed the peak in terms of Omicron infections, but hospitalizations and deaths often lag behind new confirmed cases.
Five new deaths were reported yesterday, the first day of reported numbers since Wednesday of last week.
As of yesterday, there were 34 people in hospital due to COVID-19, six of whom were in critical care.
The number of confirmed cases are dropping, however. There were 79 new confirmed cases of the virus in the province yesterday according to official numbers. That’s down from 109 on Sunday, 137 on Saturday and 176 on Friday. The numbers do not include those who test positive on home rapid tests and don’t report the results. Dr. Fitzgerald last week admitted that actual COVID cases are considerably higher than confirmed cases.
