The NunatuKavut Community Council is calling on the Nunatsiavut Government to retract and apologize for what it calls the “discriminatory and false” research contained in a report released last year.
The report, commissioned by the Nunatsiavut Government, is, according to NunatuKavut, “an attempt to discredit the legitimate ancestral claims of the Inuit of NunatuKavut.”
The council has published what it calls an independent report written by Debbie Martin, an Inuk Professor at Dalhousie University who is a member of the NunatuKavut Community Council. Martin’s report entitled “We Have Always Been Here” debunks the Nunatsiavut report, calling it a “baseless attack against the Inuit of NunatuKavut.”
Last year the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami published an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, opposing the NCC’s efforts to access Indigenous supports. The Innu Nation and Nunatsiavut Government both oppose the NCC’s attempts for Land Claims recognition.
