COVID-19 numbers across the province seem to be trending downward, which, barring the unforeseen, is something the experts expect to continue.
Amy Hurford, a professor at MUN with a specialty in infectious disease modelling, does believe that the actual number of COVID cases in the community is much higher than what’s being reported.
However, she says that doesn’t necessarily mean the data isn’t reflective of what’s happening.
Hurford believes the general trends do describe the COVID situation here.
Some concerns have been raised about a lack of PCR testing, but Hurford counters that no matter what way she does the modelling, the results are the same.
She says she has tried doing the modelling without considering testing at all, and only using hospitalizations, and her data has still been in line with what’s being reported by public health.
