The Supreme Court will soon decide whether to approve a settlement for those abused at provincially-run youth facilities in the 1970s and ’80s.
The $12.5 million deal was worked out in March between government and the roughly 75 victims, who are represented by the firm Morris Martin Moore.
The province does not admit liability as part of the settlement.
The sexual abuse was committed by staff, priests and sometimes older kids at the so-called training schools, including the Whitbourne Boys’ Home, as well as the Girls Home and Youth Centre in St. John’s.
While the settlement must still be approved by the Supreme Court, lawyer Lynn Moore has said she’s optimistic it will be since both sides are in agreement.
The court will hold a two-day hearing on the issue in mid-June.
