A report into alleged bullying and harassment of staff at Elections NL continues to be shrouded in secrecy, with the Opposition now saying they’re 100 per cent sure of its existence.
Tory Leader David Brazil said Wednesday he was 99.9 per cent sure there is a report by the citizens’ representative into complaints against Elections NL CEO Bruce Chaulk.
Thursday, Brazil said he has no doubt the report exists, especially after being denied again by Speaker Derek Bennett to ask the premier about it.
Bennett has twice ruled Brazil out of order for raising the issue in the House, citing legislation, but refusing to meet with reporters and explain the situation.
NDP Leader Jim Dinn says that flies in the face of the legislation itself which was designed to provide more accountability and transparency in the House.
What’s more, since the allegations went public yesterday, Independent MHA Paul Lane says he’s heard from others with specific knowledge of the report, right down to the fact that it’s 178 pages long. And he says the number of complainants, or staff, now stands at 22, adding the investigation went on for months before the report was recently submitted to the Speaker’s Office, which Bennett will neither confirm nor deny.
The silence from government and the Speaker is deafening, with Dinn noting there were similar rumours last year of such behaviour at Elections NL, which he says seems to have snowballed since then.
Meanwhile, the House is adjourned until May 30, with most members travelling to their districts during constituency week.
