A new video campaign featuring members of the local deaf community looks to bring attention to what is being called the province’s “silent minority.”
The Association for the Deaf says the video is about improving the visibility of the community.
Renee Phair-Healy, a registered psychologist at NLAD, says they hope to raise awareness and encourage hearing individuals to connect with the deaf community. She says the video highlights their story, as well as their need for acknowledgement, as a call to action.
While they have received support for their programs, the association says funding is at an inadequate level to address the community’s needs.
The video also features several prominent individuals lending their support to the cause, including advocate Hasan Hai, trans-rights activist Gemma Hickey, and VOCM’s Paddy Daly.
Phair-Healy says the video acts as a voice for “those who are never truly heard.”
