St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital is celebrating one century of providing healthcare services to the people of the province today.
The St. John’s hospital was first opened by the Sisters of Mercy on May 22, 1922 and since then has adapted to continue to provide care and education to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, evolving over the past 100 years.
In 1939, the hospital established it’s School of Nursing, and in 1968, St. Clare’s was recognized as a teaching hospital in affiliation with MUN’s School of Medicine. In 1971, the first palliative care unit east of Montreal was established.
Today, the hospital employs almost 500 staff.
