A new gun control bill appears to be ready to be tabled by the Federal Liberals.

A national ban is not expected, but the government could phase out handgun ownership with a limit on the number of firearm licences handed out.

The importation and manufacturing of new handguns could also be outlawed.

He says the Liberal government are looking to use the political climate of the moment to enact something they believe to be effective both as policy and politically, while the Conservatives, who have the support of many gun owners, are concerned about how far measures will go.

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino will present the bill after the daily question period.
