Don’t use the term “grey tsunami” with Seniors Advocate Dr. Suzanne Brake. She released a report on seniors issues this week.
The advocate told VOCM Morning Show co-host Gerri Lynn Mackey that language surrounding the province’s demographics is extremely negative and needs to be reconsidered.
Dr. Brake says she’s been working on seniors issues for 40 years and didn’t pull any punches when it comes to the way in which seniors are viewed in society.
She says the term “grey tsunami” makes her ill. She questioned the use of the term ‘tsunami,’ which is a negative descriptor.
The advocate says cultural attitudes about aging do not often reflect the reality.
She says society is riddled with jokes making fun of the aging process, when in reality seniors are engaged, committed, involved and contribute financially.
