An award-winning play highlighting the immigrant experience of belonging in Newfoundland and Labrador is hitting the stage this week at the LSPU Hall.
TODOS Production’s “Urn”, written by local artist Santiago Guzman, tells the story of two estranged siblings, Esteban (played by Guzman) and Mariana (played by Vanessa Cardoso-Whelan) reconnecting at their mother’s funeral, who then have to decide whether to inter their mother’s ashes in their adoptive home of St. John’s, or their homeland Mexico City.
The play, directed by Indigenous artist Nora Barker, received the Arts and Letters Senior Dramatic Script Award and has been shortlisted for the Fresh Fish Award.
Featuring many immigrant, racialized, Indigenous, and queer artists, the show aims to elevate the voices and experiences of under-represented folk in the community. A special ticket price is available to those who identify with any of those identities by emailing todosforall@gmail.com.
The show goes June 29 and 30 at the LSPU Hall. Tickets are available online.
