The city of Corner Brook is adopting new personal fireworks regulations similar to those imposed in the capital city.
From now on, personal fireworks can only be discharged on New Year’s Eve or Canada Day between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
The times were set to accommodate young families as well as adult residents, and are set to allow people with hypersensitivities or pets to prepare.
A permit must be obtained for anyone who wants to use fireworks outside those dates and times.
Additional precautions now outlined in the new regulations include that the person discharging the fireworks must be 18 or older, that fireworks cannot be discharged when wind speeds exceed 40 km/h and that fireworks must be discharged at least 24 metres away from any building, tent, camp, shelter or vehicle. The buffer increases to 300 metres for hospitals, nursing homes, and places of worship unless written consent is given.
