A Newfoundlander is in Sweden for the official launch of some of the first images released from the James Webb Space Telescope.
Bethany Downer, European Space Agency Hubble Telescope Chief Communications Officer, says the James Webb Space Telescope compliments the work of the Hubble Space Telescope which was launched 32 years ago.
Some of the first images released reveal the vastness of the universe around us.
“If you’re wowed by the images that are out there now,” says Downer “this is only just the start.”
Downer says the James Webb is focused not only on Jupiter and some of the celestial bodies closer to home, but it also peers back in time to the origins of the universe.
She says they’re looking back to some of the first stars and galaxies formed after the Big Bang. It’s helping them to see how stars are born and how stars die. “The one that’s being talked about quite a lot,” says Downer is the one revealed by US President Joe Biden involving the first deep field image from James Webb.
