The provincial government is providing mediation services to the FFAW and the Association of Seafood Producers to find a resolution to the problems faced in the shrimp fishery.
A mediator with the Labour Relations Division has been assigned to facilitate the meetings.
The price panel set the price at 90 cents per pound, but that’s not good enough for local harvesters, some of whom are landing their catches outside the province to fetch higher prices according to FFAW President Keith Sullivan.
He says some are choosing to sail all the way through the Gulf to Nova Scotia and Quebec where they’re getting as much as $1.45 per pound. Even more galling is the fact that Royal Greenland is paying far more in Quebec than it is for the same shrimp in this province, says Sullivan.
