Residents of the province are being urged to “Rethink Your Drink” and make healthier beverage choices. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation, on the other hand, is urging residents to sign a petition opposing the controversial sugar tax which comes into effect in less than a week.
Jay Goldberg, who is with the federation, labels it a tax grab and says it makes little sense because there is no effort to curb consumption of other products which contain more sugar than a can of soda pop.
Worse, he says it will be a hidden tax charged at the manufacturing level which means consumers won’t know how much tax they’re paying.
NL Premier Andrew Furey is planning to pummel taxpayers with even higher taxes next month, this time based on what you put in your shopping cart.
The last thing taxpayers need right now is a vanity pop tax.
