A chance visit to a swimming hole in metro Sunday afternoon led to an act of bravery that probably saved two lives.
Derrick Connors and his wife Debbie were out for a drive on a warm afternoon when they stopped at Duck Pond in the Town of Bauline. Shortly after arriving, Derrick noticed two young men in trouble in the water. Some of their friends were nearby but they didn’t have the swimming skills needed to venture out into deep water where the two struggling university-aged men were.
Derrick quickly removed his footwear and, fully clothed, jumped into the water, swimming the 30 or 40 feet out to the pair.
One of the friends removed his turban and threw it to Derrick as a lifeline.
However, it slipped out of the young man’s hands so Derrick had to throw it back to him. Derrick could, by this time, stand up. The first guy could stand on his own but it took the second guy a while before he could manage on his own.
After a brief struggle, he managed to bring them both to the surface and then to safety.
Both were okay, but Debbie and Derrick say one had ingested quite a bit of water.
