Swimmers can now take a dip in the shadow of Cabot Tower.
The City of St. John’s has sanctioned George’s Pond for swimming, which was previously prohibited.
The pond was previously used as the backup water supply for the capital city and had been designated as such, prohibiting swimming in the body of the water.
It has now been determined that the pond will not be used as a backup supply going forward, leading to the change.
New signage is now in place, warning swimmers to use the pond at their own risk.
Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary, who is an avid swimmer, went for a dip at the pond herself once the change had been finalized.
She calls it a beautiful space that the city is lucky to have. She says it’s important that people who use the pond are respectful in terms of parking and garbage.
