It’s an emotional time for the workers at Come By Chance.
Six people remain in hospital as the result of an explosion or flash fire that injured eight and has had a devastating impact on co-workers and those who witnessed the event.
Glenn Nolan of the United Steelworkers Union broke down numerous times as he described a very difficult weekend for the people involved.
Choking back tears, Nolan says right now they’re focusing on supporting the workers and their families, and the witnesses who are traumatized.
Nolan says the injuries suffered include physical and emotional injuries. He says those who are traumatized will be traumatized for a while.
The union has emails sent out to update those affected. He says if one worker gets hurt, “we all get hurt” and notes that families appreciate all the support they’ve received.
Workers Still in Hospital in Stable Condition: Parsons
Meanwhile, the Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology says the remaining workers in hospital are in stable condition according to the latest update provided to workers.
Renovation work was well underway on converting the facility from an oil refinery to a producer of biofuels when the incident occurred.
Minister Andrew Parsons says trauma counselling and EAP programs are being provided to workers and their families while the incident is under investigation.
He says the earliest return to work, according to the company, would be September 12th pending the ongoing investigation.
