One of the divers who helped confirm the discovery of a WWII-era B-24 Liberator bomber in Gander Lake says the wreckage is in “remarkable condition.”
The vessel crashed into the lake shortly after take off in September 1943.
Explorer in residence with the Royal Canadian Geographical society, Jill Heinerth, was one of the people who dove down to the wreckage.
She explains that Gander Lake is very cold and deep, which is why it was able to be preserved so well.
Heinerth believes such wreckage sites are an example of the “future of tourism,” noting that there is a great opportunity for adventure eco tourism.
She says Rick Stanley of Ocean Quest has been bringing people to such sites, like those at Bell Island, for years.
She wants the province to know how much people from across the country want to know about this history and the opportunity that exists to bring people here.
