The case involving several recent shootings in the St. John’s metro region was back before the courts this morning.
The shootings, said to be part of a turf war, date back to mid-May and happened around St. John’s, Paradise and the Goulds.
But it all took a much more dangerous and public turn on May 26, when an apartment building was sprayed with bullets, and an east-end home was shot up and firebombed.
Three people were arrested—including 20-year-old Brandon Chafe—and all were released.
Three weeks later, Chafe was arrested again, this time charged with attempted murder and robbery after a 21-year-old man was shot and seriously injured in the Goulds.
Chafe has been at the Pen ever since, but was delayed appearing by video today because he’s currently in segregation, though it’s not clear why.
He’s also the only one of the three suspects in custody now.
The other two—22-year-old Thomas Barnes and 19-year-old Abigail Gillingham—are out on bail and had lawyers appear for them.
Barnes is charged with aggravated assault and firearms offences in the Goulds shooting, while Gillingham is accused of gun offences, and allowing a minor to be in a bar.
Court has heard that it’s a complex case, which has led to delays with the distribution of information between the Crown and several defence lawyers.
All hands are due back in provincial court on October 3, possibly to enter pleas to the plethora of charges.
