Memorial University’s folklore department made a guest appearance at the St. John’s Farmer’s Market this weekend with a pop-up exhibit of photographs and displays to emphasize the market’s place in the community.
The students spent the first month of school conducting research at the market by interviewing vendors to create the exhibition. Their goal is to draw attention to the market as a community of its own and the diversity of knowledge it brings to the city.
Karin Murray-Bergquist (below, right), a first year PhD student involved in the project, says the thing about folklore is that it is everywhere. It is often the intangible aspects of culture that go unnoticed.
She says a lot of the vendors have learned their craft or recipes from previous generations and that is the essence of folklore.
