The province’s Teachers’ Union is “alarmed” by the “unprecedented” volume of human resource issues being brought forward by members just a month or so into the new school year.
NLTA President Trent Langdon says the province has schools with multiple vacant teaching positions, and he’s hearing daily from members “discouraged by the struggle to meet student needs” in schools.
Payroll delays and errors are also at what Langdon calls an all-time high, and are causing hardship for some teachers.
The NLTA issued a joint release with the Council of Atlantic Provinces’ Teachers Association on resource issues last week.
Langdon says action is needed to create a comprehensive strategy to address what he calls a crisis in teacher recruitment and retention in the province.
“Something more needs to be done,” says Langton to address the stresses on the system.
