The NDP says Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should be very concerned about the fund being created by the provincial government.
Leader Jim Dinn says the Future Fund Act lacks transparency with very little information on the value of public assets to be sold off, and no intention of disclosing the liabilities related to decommissioning and abandonment activities.
Dinn says that’s not fair to public sector workers and their families and communities who rely on the jobs created by those assets.
Meanwhile, the official Opposition says government is writing itself a ‘blank cheque’ with the Future Fund. Barry Petten and Tony Wakeham say they proposed a number of amendments to increase accountability and ensure public funds won’t be spent without the approval of the legislature, but the amendments were defeated.
