The NLTA has concerns surrounding a number of recommendations in the Teacher Allocation Review report released last week—particularly as they relate to collective bargaining.
Trent Langdon says while he’s pleased to see the long-awaited report finally released, there are some areas of concern.
He says the Teachers’ Union is pleased to see recommendations that include a hard cap on class sizes, and the recognition of class composition, but a recommendation to provide a new policy for the placement and hiring of teachers and teaching assistants based on merit is “worrisome.”
He says it’s part of a growing trend in the US and larger centres. He says judging the job a teacher is doing by evaluating the success of students carries its own pitfalls and is extremely disconcerting.
