A wind energy expert says offshore farms will be the go-to once space on land is “exhausted.”
The province is currently evaluating 31 land nominations for onshore projects, while the feds are assessing the Atlantic offshore region in anticipation of proposals.
While the focus has so far been on cheaper, land-based projects, companies are also preparing to get their feet wet offshore.
Keith Towse, the director of business development with Ireland-based Simply Blue Group, says they have no choice, since they’ll eventually run out of terra firma.
He says there are opportunities in Nova Scotia for gigawatt-scale projects but companies are running out of space, adding while there are similar opportunities on land in this province, they, too, will become exhausted.
The government is assessing the land nominations to determine which ones will be offered up during the competitive bid process.
The call for bids is expected to be launched on December 15.
