The province’s Seniors’ Advocate has released a status report on 25 recommendations made by her office, showing that more work needs to be done.
Advocate Susan Walsh says of the recommendations made, 44 per cent have been fully implemented, 44 per cent are partially implemented and 12 per cent saw little or no meaningful progress.
Walsh says of the recommendations that were implemented, some departments even went further than expected to enhance programs and services for seniors.
Walsh says it is unfortunate that some recommendations have seen no action, including the integration of the cost of driving medicals for those age 75 and older to the Medical Care Plan. That mandatory expense is unaffordable for some and is jeopardizing the independence of some seniors.
One of the more outstanding items is the 2019 recommendation to conduct a complete review of long-term and personal care homes in the province.
Health Minister Tom Osborne yesterday indicated that government does intend to conduct a comprehensive review.
