A local family is sharing their son’s story of survival to reinforce that giving blood saves lives.
In 2017, David Young of Conception Bay South was diagnosed with stage four burkitt leukemia, the fasted growing type of cancer.
After a combination of chemotherapy and blood donations Young, who is now nine years old, is now happy and completely healthy.
Young’s mother, Melanie Murphy says it was the kindness of blood donors that helped save her son’s life. She says blood donors allowed her family’s story to have a happy ending.
Yesterday, Canadian Blood Services held a special blood drive called “From Stage Four to Grade Four” to honour Young’s success story.
David was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma and needed blood regularly. The clinic, From Stage 4 to Grade 4 happening at the Wicklow Street location 3-7pm and

Gordon Skiffington, Territory Manager for Canadian Blood Services NL, says the drive was successful, with about 100 people turning out to give.
Skiffington says getting to share Young’s story of survival is “incredible.”
He says people don’t realize the difference they make when they donate. He says it comes “straight from the heart” and only takes about an hour of someone’s time.
