Players in the local fishing industry are joining the call for a federal inquiry into fishing vessel safety.
Jeannette Russell, the mother of Marc Russell who along with crewmate Joey Jenkins was lost on a fishing trip off the coast of Labrador last year, has called for an inquiry and greater Search and Rescue resources in Labrador.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan says now is the perfect opportunity to put pressure on Ottawa with federal Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray in St. John’s for a Seal Summit.
“We need action,” says Sullivan.
The Association of Seafood Producers says it supports Russell’s call. Executive Director Derek Butler calls it a “double Tragedy” when other sectors see inquiries, commissions and studies, but the fishery is forced to accept tragic losses of life.
