Emergency access has been restored to a section of Trepassey cut off from the rest of town on the weekend after the breakwater again failed to keep out the sea.
The three dozen people who live on the lower coast had no means to either get to or from their property, leaving Mayor Rita Pennell to wonder if someone will have to die before the breakwater is repaired. Mayor Pennell says proper cribbing and protective barriers have to be installed to prevent the full force of the ocean crashing the breakwater.
The road, which washed out, also protect vital water lines.
Starting at about 11:00 Saturday night and lasting until this morning, people were barred either in or from their property. Mayor Pennell says no emergency vehicle could have gotten through so the people were not safe.
The mayor is calling on the minister of transportation and infrastructure to visit the town to get a first-hand look at the situation.
