The mom of a young child in Gander is concerned that their hospital could lose its obstetrics unit.
Samantha Abbott’s two-year-old was born at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander, but she fears that government will end up closing out the unit there and going with just the one at the regional hospital in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Abbott is worried as The Health Accord recommends there be just one obstetrics unit in central.
Gander has had nursing shortages on that unit but she says organizational and administrative failures are not an adequate reason to remove a core hospital service.
