A new charter carrying another 170 Ukrainian refugees is expected in the province next Tuesday.
Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne says it will be the fourth charter of Ukrainians to the province, bringing the total number of newcomers to NL fleeing the war to 1,300.
To date there have been three charters sponsored by the provincial government carrying some 520 people, while the others have been coming in on their own. That equates to an average of one new Ukrainian family arriving in the province every day.
That says Byrne is due to the success of the Ukrainian desk set up by the provincial government in Warsaw, and which will continue to be in place for the foreseeable future.
In the meantime, Byrne says Ukrainian newcomers are securing employment and housing. He says two-thirds of Ukrainian arrivals are employed and “very few” are in temporary housing.
He says hotel rooms have been set aside for families on their arrival, but generally they don’t stay long, making room for the next wave of arrivals.
