A vigil is being held at Memorial University’s St. John’s campus today to mark the anniversary of the mass shooting of female engineering students at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in December of 1989.
The killer singled out the women, killing 14.
A National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women was established by the Canadian government in 1991 to mark the tragedy.
This evening’s vigil will include a candlelight procession of 14 students, representing each of the lives lost. The vigil will be held at 6 p.m. in the main lecture theatre in MUN’s Engineering Building, with a reception to follow.
