A fourth flight of Ukrainian refugees touched down in St. John’s last night, bringing the number of Ukrainian refugees in the province to 1,300.
Many were filled with mixed emotions—sadness as the war forced them to leave their home, but happiness and relief to have arrived in a safe country.
Sofiia Galasymi is excited to make Newfoundland and Labrador her new home as certain areas remind her of Ukraine.
She says she discovered the province through YouTube and TikTok videos and was drawn to the colourful buildings of downtown St. John’s that reminded her of similar buildings back home.
It was also an evening for families to reunite. Anastasiia Revina, a Ukrainian refugee who arrived earlier in the year, got to see her grandmother and her pet rabbit Milky for the first time in months.
She says it’s incredible to be reunited as her grandmother cried often due to the war and their separation.
