There’s no change in the mil rate for property owners in Gander.
The airport town tabled its budget for 2023 during yesterday’s council meeting.
The overall operating budget has increased by over $1.2 million, totaling $21,115,088.
The town mil rate will remain unchanged at 7.6 for residential properties and 7.7 for commercial.
Councillor Wilson Hoffe says the town understands many are struggling with the increased cost of living but the town will provide assistance to offset rising costs.
Hoffe says those with the lowest household incomes will be assisted with a $5,000 dollar increase to the threshold for tax reductions.
With the increased threshold, households with a total income up to $20,750 will be eligible for a 50 per cent tax reduction.
The town is spending $700,000 on recreational upgrades including new playgrounds and installation of an accessibility ramp at Cobb’s Pond Rotary Park.
As well, additional funding will be set aside for local recreational facilities in preparation for the 2024 NL Winter Games.
