The provincial government is wasting little time in issuing a request for proposals for a consultant to develop a master plan and program for the replacement of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s.
Premier Andrew Furey surprised many when he announced plans to replace the century-old downtown facility in late October.
The province says replacing the hospital will help to expand access to health care and ensure the appropriate infrastructure is in place to meet future health care needs.
That requires detailed and innovative planning says the Department of Health. The consultant will be asked to determine the scope of services required for a new hospital in the region, including appropriate space and location requirements.
The consultant will also assess acute care services in the area. The RFP closes on January 23.
While not surprised by plans to replace the hospital, Registered Nurses Union President Yvette Coffey says the province has a human resources crisis in health care and that needs to be addressed first.
