The City of St. John’s is coming out of yet another challenging fiscal year, but council’s lead for finance believes the city is on stable footing heading into 2023.
The impact of unprecedented levels of inflation, particularly the price of diesel, took a toll on the city in 2022.
In the 2023 budget the city managed to stave off mil rate increases, but did increase the water tax and recreation fees.
Councilor Ron Ellsworth believes the city is in a “very strong position” heading into the new year.
He says there are inflationary pressures that are out of the city’s control, and have been hitting people hard. He’s comfortable with where the city is, but they have to be cautious as they move forward.
