Newfoundland and Labrador was one of only two provinces which did not levy any fines for COVID-19 violations despite having the legislative authority to do so.
Data from the Public Health Agency of Canada says 3,614 tickets were handed out under the Federal Quarantine Act between January and August totaling almost $15 million.
Most of the tickets—2,672—were handed out in Ontario as the busiest airport and US land crossings are in that province. Nobody in Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island was cited for COVID violations while 21 fines were levied in New Brunswick and two in Nova Scotia.
The agency does not have data from Saskatchewan or Alberta as those provinces had not adopted the legislation needed in order for the fines to be levied.
Only 95 of the tickets have been paid so the bulk of the money is outstanding.
