Municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador are sending out a reminder to those planning to ring in the New Year with the use of fireworks.
The fireworks by-law in the City of St. John’s allows for the use of family fireworks between the hours of 7:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 12:30 a.m. the following day.
During the holidays, family fireworks are only allowed on New Year’s Eve from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the following day.

Family fireworks are those considered to be low-hazard and the use of any aerial fireworks or pyrotechnics requires special approval from the City.
Those planning to discharge fireworks must be aged 18 and older, must have immediate access to a fire extinguisher and water in case of an emergency, aim fireworks away from people, buildings, vehicles, and public spaces.

Residents in Mount Pearl are permitted to light up the sky between dusk on New Year’s Eve and 12:30 a.m.
Discharging fireworks outside regulated hours can result in a fine from the City.
If weather conditions are not suitable, an alternate date will be announced.
