SEA-NL is calling on the federal government to lift its moratorium on Atlantic mackerel.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada implemented the moratorium for commercial and bait fisheries in Quebec and Atlantic Canada this past March.
SEA-NL Executive Director Ryan Cleary says it’s unnecessary as many people who fish in this province reported an abundance of Atlantic mackerel.

Along with requesting the end of the moratorium, SEA-NL asks that a quota comparable to the United States be established.
The American quota is set at 2,629 tonnes.
It’s rumoured that Canada is looking to come to an agreement with the U.S. to control Atlantic mackerel populations with meetings scheduled for February.
