Emergency responders successfully tackled the wildfires in central Newfoundland over the summer, and the Premier of the province says there are some valuable lessons to be taken away from the experience.
Andrew Furey says those lessons are around firefighting assets that are available, and the coordination across municipal and other provincial governments.
He says Forestry Minister Derrick Bragg has done a post-mortem on the event and has looked at ways to improve for the future.
That said, Furey believes a lot of good things have already been done that allowed the province to tackle last summer’s blaze as well as it did—such as sending our firefighters to battle blazes in other jurisdictions so they can bring back that experience.
He says there are always lessons coming out of such a major event, and he is confident that Minister Bragg will ensure the system is ready for the next one—even though Furey believes the system at the time was in a “decent and a good spot.”
