The local Ukrainian community is preparing for Christmas celebrations this weekend.
Both the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox churches mark Christmas according to the old Julian calendar on January 7.
Brother Ivan Dzhur of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church says Father Andrij Onuferko of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy in Toronto is in St. John’s to lead a church service this Saturday at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s.
On Friday, January 6, Father Andrij will be available for confessions in both English and Ukrainian at the Basilica, while on January 7, he will lead liturgy according to Byzantine rites for Christmas day at 10:30 a.m.
