Some tough talk right out of the gate from the new president of the FFAW.
Greg Pretty defeated Dave Callahan yesterday by a vote of 43 to 11 to become the fourth president in the 50-year history of the province’s largest fisheries union.
But it was not without controversy after a third candidate, Jason Sullivan, was disqualified for his links to now-defunct upstart rival union FishNL.
Nonetheless, Pretty came out swinging immediately following his election.
He says the union is putting the fish companies on notice that if they continue to post their own prices, “they’ll be shut down,” adding they’ll have no hesitation taking a dispute “to the streets.”
Pretty had an equally blunt message for government.
He says the current leadership has no vision for the fishery over the next five to 10 years, adding while the premier may have “an inkling” of what has to be done, his government has yet to show it.
Pretty takes over from Keith Sullivan who announced his surprise departure in early December.
The new president says he plans to complete the current term until the next election in 2024, “and then move on.”
