It became the soundtrack to Team Canada’s journey to gold at the World Juniors in Halifax, but ‘Heave Away’ was a song The Fables almost didn’t record.
Band member Billy Sutton says the tune was first recorded in 1998, and released in ’99.
At the time, they needed one more tune to complete the album they were recording, and Heave Away was a last-minute, “throw away” addition.
Despite the added exposure through the World Juniors, Sutton says they won’t be seeing any additional royalties because it wasn’t the TV networks that played the song—it was the arena.
But, that doesn’t mean the band won’t see any benefits.
The band has received an inquiry to play a gig in Halifax next month, so “we’ll see” says Sutton.
