A young sports broadcaster says it was the opportunity of a lifetime to hit the airwaves for Saturday’s Newfoundland Growlers game.
14-year-old Seth Hyde made his debut in the Bob Cole Media Centre as colour commentator alongside Growlers broadcaster Chris Ballard.
Hyde is no stranger behind the microphone as he has been doing commentary for local minor hockey teams for years, starting after a bout of bad luck during one of his own games.
He says he was injured at the time and wanted to give commentary a try in order to stay involved in the game. Hyde jokes that it was “the best injury of my life” as he didn’t think it would lead him to becoming a commentator for the Growlers.
The 14-year-old received a shoutout on Hockey Night in Canada during the third period in a game between the Detroit Red Wings and his favourite team—the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He says the recognition was an incredible honour and thanks all his supporters for helping him get to this level.
