A 29-year-old Fortune man has been charged in connection with a case of vandalism this week that knocked out power to a portion of the Burin Peninsula for an extended period.
Newfoundland Power says someone broke into the substation in Grand Bank yesterday and attempted to steal the copper grounding wire inside.
Police responded to the scene and arrested a man on site. A search of his vehicle revealed a quantity of copper wire.
The incident knocked out power for about 2,300 customers for 11 hours. Newfoundland Power officials say posed a serious safety concern to workers and the suspect himself.
