This week’s frigid temperatures meant more people were turning up their thermostats, driving demand on the island’s power grid, but NL Hydro says there was plenty of reserve.
Hydro says reserves over the last four days have been between 500 and 675 MV at peak times.
They say for context, the Holyrood generating station has the capacity to provide roughly 470 MW of power to the system. They say they’re confident in their ability to reliably service customers through the winter and are monitoring the system closely.
Wind chills for much of the island Friday morning were in the range of -19 C, but that will reverse significantly for some areas with the latest storm system heading this way.
Temperatures on the eastern portion of the island could reach 10 C by tomorrow.
