What feels like a relentless onslaught of rain, freezing rain, and snow will finally start to dissipate for most parts of the island over the next 24 hours.
Some weather warnings have ended, but rainfall warnings continue for the island’s south coast into the evening and overnight.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says the system, which moved into the area on Friday is being blocked by a strong area of high pressure over Labrador. That’s held the system in place, allowing the precipitation to continue to pump into the area for several days.
A few freezing rain warnings for central and the northeast coast have now ended, but the lingering effects may continue to be felt with some patchy freezing drizzle remaining through the evening.
For the rest of the island, freezing rain warnings continue for the west coast and Northern Peninsula.
Freezing rain warnings continue for Green Bay/White Bay, the Northern Peninsula, and the Humber Valley region. Wind warnings meanwhile continue for the Wreck House and west coast.
Meanwhile, due to the weather Canada Post has suspended mail delivery for the day in a number of areas affected by adverse weather conditions.
A red alert, meaning that delivery agents will not be sent out, has been issued for Corner Brook, Stephenville, the Bay d’Espoir area (including St. Alban’s), and the Connaigre Peninsula.
