Health Minister Tom Osborne is in Ireland gauging interest among local medical graduates in coming to Newfoundland and Labrador to practice.
The province is looking at Ireland because its training is comparable to our own, and because of the number of Canadians who are studying there who may want to come back.
He says they visited a medical training facility on Monday where 300 Canadian students are enrolled this year.
That’s significant says Osborne and previously there was no path back to Canada except through the CaRMS process—an algorithm used to match students into postgraduate medical training programs.
He says the province is looking at paths back, including the addition of five medical grad seats at MUN, and the possibility of adding even more with a focus on Canadian medical residents.
